Hip osteoarthritis embolization.
A minimally invasive, outpatient option for persistent hip arthritis pain, using the same approach as GAE for the knee.
The knee technique, applied to the hip.
Like the knee, an arthritic hip can develop inflamed tissue and abnormal small blood vessels that contribute to pain.
Hip embolization uses a thin catheter to reach the arteries supplying the inflamed areas around the joint and reduce that blood flow with microscopic particles. It is a newer application with a growing body of clinical research.
Who it can help.
From consultation to recovery.
We review your symptoms, past treatments and imaging, and talk through whether embolization is right for you.
Through a pinhole in the skin, a thin catheter is guided under live X-ray to the arteries feeding the inflamed tissue. Tiny particles slow that blood flow. You are awake but comfortable with light sedation.
You go home within a few hours, and we follow up to track your progress.
What patients can expect.
Many patients notice gradual improvement in pain over the weeks after treatment. Embolization does not prevent future options such as hip replacement.
