Knee arthritis / GAE

Genicular artery embolization.

A nonsurgical, outpatient treatment for persistent knee osteoarthritis pain. No incision, no hospital stay.

What it is

Treating knee pain at its source.

In knee osteoarthritis, the lining of the joint becomes inflamed and grows extra small blood vessels. Those vessels feed the inflammation, and the nerves that travel with them drive much of the pain.

GAE closes off those abnormal vessels from the inside. A thin catheter is guided through the arteries to the knee, and microscopic particles reduce blood flow to the inflamed tissue while the normal blood supply to the knee stays intact.

Dr. Baheti is one of the most experienced GAE physicians in Washington State, with more than 150 procedures performed since January 2026.

Who it can help

Is GAE right for you?

Knee pain from osteoarthritis that has lasted months despite medications, injections or physical therapy
People who want to delay or avoid knee replacement, or are not ready for surgery
People who are not good surgical candidates because of other health conditions
Active people who want to keep moving with less pain
What to expect

From consultation to recovery.

01 / Consultation

We review your symptoms, past treatments and imaging, and talk through whether embolization is right for you.

02 / Procedure day

Through a pinhole in the skin, a thin catheter is guided under live X-ray to the arteries feeding the inflamed tissue. Tiny particles slow that blood flow. You are awake but comfortable with light sedation.

03 / Recovery

You go home within a few hours, and we follow up to track your progress.

Results

Lasting relief for most patients.

In clinical studies, about 70% of patients report meaningful pain relief lasting 1 to 3 years.

Relief often begins within a few weeks and continues to build over the first few months. GAE does not rule out other treatments later, including knee replacement.

Some patients notice mild, temporary soreness or skin discoloration over the knee in the first days after treatment. This typically resolves on its own.
