Colorectal / Hemorrhoid embolization

Hemorrhoid embolization.

A minimally invasive treatment for bleeding internal hemorrhoids. No large incisions, no banding, and minimal downtime.

What it is

Stop the bleeding at its source.

Internal hemorrhoids are cushions of blood vessels inside the rectum that can enlarge and bleed. Bleeding is often the most frustrating symptom, and it can keep coming back after banding or other treatments.

Hemorrhoid embolization reduces blood flow to the hemorrhoids from the inside, through a thin catheter, with no instruments in the anal area. Without that blood flow, the hemorrhoids shrink and bleeding settles.

What to expect

From consultation to recovery.

01 / Consultation

We review your symptoms and history, and coordinate with your colorectal surgeon, gastroenterologist or primary care physician.

02 / Procedure day

Through a pinhole in the skin, a thin catheter is guided to the arteries supplying the hemorrhoids, which are closed with tiny coils or particles. You are awake but comfortable with light sedation.

03 / Recovery

You go home within a few hours. There is no wound in the anal area, so downtime is minimal.

Results

Less bleeding, minimal downtime.

Most patients notice less bleeding within days to weeks. Embolization can also be combined with or followed by other hemorrhoid treatments if needed.
